Week 8: Using the Public Computers & Printing

Time to start roaming the Library! This week we’re going to use some of the services that our patrons love and depend on.

  1. Using your library card, log onto one of the public computers. Take a selfie of you at the computer and email it to your manager.
  2. On the computer, find your way to our blog and post a comment about your experience using the computer, or how this service benefits our patrons.
  3. With your comment showing on the screen, print a black & white double sided document of this page.
  4. Release the print job using the override. (Please remember to keep this information for staff use only)
  5. Write your name on your print and give it to your manager.

    Yes, a little embarrassing taking your picture with the public watching. They took the explanation with good spirit and a little laugh. It is good to get an idea of how it feels for the public at the computers. It’s great we can offer the service to people; many times I hear the comment ‘my computer is not working, and I’m so glad the Library has ones we can use’.

    Like Beth, I often hear people say either their computer or their printer has crashed and they are happy to be able to use one of ours. Patrons also like that they can log in and out multiple times and get offered the extra 15 minutes if it’s not busy. It feels a bit strange using the computers in the large print alcove, like I’m in a secret hideaway!

  3. We often help the kids up here, so it wasn’t that foreign to me. Still not great at the selfies LOL!!! It is a great service for our patrons. It draws people who may not have access to a computer at home, or have a computer but can’t afford internet. It also allows folks who need assistance with certain things a chance to seek help.

    I think it’s great to have a practice using the public computers – it’s easy to forget little things our patrons may need assistance with.

  5. It’s amazing to see the variety of the sites our public visit every day. I can’t imagine what people without a computer or mobile device would do without the Library’s computer/internet services.

    I’m taking this opportunity while it’s quiet to use the computer in YS to post my comment. Since it’s quiet no one has noticed what I am doing, so no weird looks. Yay!

    Whether it’s because I wear bifocals, or I’m not tall enough, I find the screen too high for me when sitting on a stool. Could we offer cushions? 😉

    Even though more and more people have their own computers or mobile devices, patrons rely a great deal on the computer and printing services offered by the library. Not just the actual hardware, although that is of great benefit to those who can’t afford to purchase their own, or their equipment has failed; People also rely on the assistance we provide in helping them to navigate the internet, set up and manage their email, or creating a document in Word, Excel, or Publisher. Don’t believe me? Observe the reactions when the computers aren’t available, or the Internet goes down. 🙂

    It’s great that the public has a place they can come to use the computer, especially for those who can’t access one at home.

    I love that these computers are available to the public! The cost of private Internet access is higher in Canada than in much of the world, at this point, and it doesn’t seem that our government has been eager to regulate that up to this point – hopefully that will change but until it does, yay for libraries bringing access to information! Also I notice so many people using our computers for things like resumes, job applications, filling out government forms, etc. It’s clearly a hugely valuable part of library service. I’m glad to have the opportunity to log on and see what the public sees when they do the same!
