Week 14: ZoomText

This program is wonderful and underused in our Library. Designed for those with impaired vision, (which is pretty much all of us to some degree) it is here to make the computers as accessible as possible.

  1. Log onto the ZoomText computer.
  2. Using the resources located in the Info Desk Binder or the Q:\IT Help folder, get started with ZoomText.
  3. Use both the Magnifier & Reader options.
  4. Save a ZoomText Configuration to the computer and use your first name as the file name. Take a picture of your newly saved configuration file.
  5. What are 5 different features of ZoomText? Be detailed in your answers and identify how they may be helpful to those with visual impairments.
  6. Email your list & your picture to your manager.

Week 13: Merlin & Awesome Box

After last week, we’ll go easy this week. Give these tasks a try.

  1. Using Merlin, enlarge something and take a selfie of you at the machine.
  2. How many different colour schemes does the Merlin offer?
  3. Find something that you think is awesome. Log into Awesome Box and scan it.
  4. While visiting the Library’s website, take a picture of your Awesomed item next to the Awesome Box widget. See the example.awe
  5. From your iPad send the 2 pictures & 1 answer to your manager in the same email.

Week 12: Back to the Future!!! (and the copier/scanner)

We received a suggestion (Thank you!) that we should do more activities on the public copier/scanner as there is such a wide variety of uses that our public require. This week’s assignment will use examples of situations that have come up with our patrons.  Remember to read the prompts on the display screen of the copier/scanner and to clear your settings following each job.  Use coins from the Info Desk to complete these tasks.

Something to consider – These tasks are a little trickier than standard copying or scanning. When assisting the public, it is a good idea to let them know that it can be a bit of trial and error to get the result they want.  Use your judgment on when to reimburse the public for copies that don’t give the desired result.

  1. Find the ‘Week 12 Prints’ folder at the Info Desk.
  2. Using the colour print, enlarge the entire document so it copies and fills (as best as possible) an 8 ½” x 11” page in black & white.
  3. Using the colour and the black & white print, copy both so that you create a double-sided black & white page.
  4. Using the fake driver’s license, copy both sides of the license so that both images appear on the same side of one black & white page. Hint: You may want to review the instructions in the IT Help folder on the Q drive.
  5. Using the fake driver’s license, scan both sides & email it to your manager.
  6. Write your name on your 3 prints & give them to your manager.
  7. Return the ‘Week 12 Prints’ to the Info Desk for the next user.
